My name is Claire Ferguson, a Program Leader with Operation Groundswell, located in Toronto, Canada
Operation Groundswell is a Toronto based organization that organizes and facilitates 6-week educational and volunteer backpacking programs throughout the world for youth aged 18-30.

Welcome: We were warmly welcomed by the family. The guesthouse was very clean and we felt right at home! Even though it was late, they had dinner ready.
Homestay: The homestay was fantastic. Jeevan’s family is very kind and made us feel like part of the family. It was easy to spend hours lounging around the house.
Family and Food: Gunja cooks so much! I can’t believe how much food is prepared in such a small kitchen. Everything was delicious, and all our participants with allergies or particular food needs were accommodated. There was always LOTS of food, and although we aren’t used to eating so late at night, we were certainly always very hungry once dinner time came around.
Nature: The area is beautiful , although the thought of leopards made it scary to go to the bathroom at night.
Project: I think we were able to contribute what we could to the project, though we weren’t always sure we were being helpful. It wasn’t always clear who decided which member of the community would receive the toilet (whether the community at large decided, or whether the Verma family decided). It would have been nice to know more about the family that we were building the toilet for, to get to know them and their situation, or to learn more about the importance of a clean santitation system, as it is something we often take for granted at home.
Culture: Jeevan did a great job exposing is to Kamaon culture, bringing us to many temples in the area, and inviting us to part of a wedding ceremony. We weren’t really sure what the ceremony was for before we went, but we found out. More information about the marriage process would be interesting.
Community: I think we integrated really well into the Verma family, but didn’t engage much with the rest of the community. Everyone seemed very friendly and welcoming though.

It was my first time volunteering. Before I was travelling in India with my dad for two weeks, so the difference between those two was very big and unfortunately I was very tired because of that. The difference made me also feel a little homesick and all together I became sick the first 3 days, having fever, coughing, cold etc. The family took care of me very well! They were bringing me tea, water, food and medicines. After three days only some coughing was left and I went outside, but still I wanted to take it slow because of my tiredness. They introduced me to a ceremony at their lovely temple. The rest of days I could help with some washing, teaching and playing with the children. I also decided to donate a sewing machine, something that could be very useful for all the damaged clothes of the Kanda children and for making new clothes.
I would have loved to help with more such as farming, fieldwork and building projects.
I hope many more volunteers will come here and give the community more body.

Nathan Solar
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
nathansolar@hotmail.com
I have found the overall experience to be generally hospitable. The house family was respectful enough, giving me my own room and calling me in when food was prepared. During my stay I helped in masonry work but was mostly teaching in the class room to 15 children age 2-10. The teacher who helped me was kind to me but occasionally used a more physical means of motivation towards the children that was, to my taste, indifferent, however most of the children were very respectful and polite. The nature in Kanda is beautiful and while I found the expense to be high, (keep in mind half of the expense goes to helping the school and construction) the 11 days I spent in Kanda were peaceful and a good escape from the rest of the world. I recommend the opportunity.

Hello and greetings from Kanda!
My name is Marcelo Argueta from Canada , I am currently a volunteer at R.O.S.E. (with Sara from Canada and Elena from Germany ) who is currently helping Jeevan Verma, the head of the NGO, with some computer work as well as helping with the kids of the school he runs and helping with the family with their seasonal agriculture.  volunteering with R.O.S.E.! It has been a really great experience for me. In my first weeks of volunteering here, I have helped with their cultivation of wheat, daal (lentils), coriander seed, garlic and other crops. Monsoon season is near which means there is much work to be done. Morning are usually spent at the primary school assisting in a school curriculum of Hindi, English and Math. The kids are numerous and come from very poor families, therefore are usually very happy at receiving the care and attention of volunteers. The kids are dismissed at 12:30 and volunteers go back to the homestay for lunch. Afternoons are usually spent helping the family with agriculture and getting to know the village. there is a small fee for staying with us which includes accommodation and food. This fee depends on how long you plan on staying with visitors at ChaokoreeROSE.
This is an incredible experience,

I have stayed for 10 days at Kanda and it has been very interesting to live with a local

family in Uttarakhand. Kanda is a beautiful place and the trekking in the area was

wonderful. Also helping the community by teaching their childeren was great. The family

and local people were very friendly. They invented me at a wedding and it was a unique

experience. Staying at ROSE Kanda has been great to experience India in a more authentic

way.  Mattheu Colle Belgium collematthieu@hotmail.comMattheu writing feedback 06-06-2013 ROSE kids playing on 04-06-2013 Mattheu teaching ROSE kids 04-06-2013 Mattheu from Belgeam with the ROSE kids 01-06-2013 Bhany offering chocklet on his birth day 30-05-2013 Matthu teaching to ROSE Kids 30-05-2013

MY TRAVELLING EXPERIENCES IN INDIA HAVE BEEN HARD WORK BUT REALLY ENJOYABLE. I HAVE

ALWAYS HAD A LOVE FOR TRAVEL, AS IT MUST BE A
SPIRITUAL MARK AS WEL, ONE FEELS THAT HE HAS TO DO WHAT HE HAS TO DO. MY ENJOYMENT OF

HELPING OTHER PEOPLE AND GIVING
SOMETHING BACK TOWARDS A POORER COMMUNITITY IS ALWAYS AS IS A GOOD WAY TO PAY BACK ANY

BAD GUILT FEELINGS.
I HOPE THAT MY EXPERIENCE HERE HAS BEEN WORTH WHILE AS I AM SURE THAT IT HAS. I STAYED

WITH A HOST FAMILY AND ALSO WORKED ON A
I ALWAYS SEEM TO BE ABLE TO ADJUST TOWARDS OTHER CULTURES AND DIFFERENT WAYS OFF DOING.
THE FAMILY GUEST HOUSE WAS CALLED ROSE AND PAINTED IN BRIGHT COLOURS EVERYTHING ABOUT

INDIA IS BRIGHT CHEERFUL AND COLOURFUL I HAVE ALWAYS
BEEN KEEN ON SEEING THIS WITH MY OWN EYES.
AND I FEEL THAT IT IS ALWAYS GOOD TO MAKE YOUR OWN WAY IN THE WORLD, SINCE IT IS GOOD TO

GET ADICE AT TIMES BUT
I FEEL THAT IT IS ALSO GOOD TO TRUST YOUR OWN INSTINCTS AS WELL.
I HAVE OFTEN FELT THAT THREE MONTHS WOULD HAVE BEEEN BETER HERE, THOUGH THE WORK THAT i

HAVE DONE HAS PROBABLY TAKEN
ALONG THE PLACE OFF THREE MONTHS. I STARTED ON THE 8TH JANUARY AND COMPLETED MY

PLACEMENT ON THE 9TH FEBRUARY 2012.
THE WAY OFF LIFE HERE IS VERY DIFFERENT AS WHEN YOU TRY AND DO SOMETHING THINGS ARE

ALWAYS DONE IN A VERY DIFFERENT WAY, BUT THAT
IS OKAY I THINK. IT WOULD BE BORING IFF WE WERE ALL THE SAME WOULDNT IT?
THE LANDSCAPE IS QUITE SOMETHING HERE I ALWAYS ENJOY AND WANT TO AND DO APPRECIATE THE

BEUITIES OFF NATURE HAS TO OFFER.
THE LANDSCAPER WHERE I AM STAYING IS RELATIVELY MOUNTAINOUS SINCE WE ARE SITUATED ON

RATHER A HIGH PLATOE. THIS MAKES THE TEMPERATURE
ALMOST IDEAL FOR ME.
TRAVEL IS ALWAYS GOOD FOR THE SOUL IT HELPS TO CLENCE ANY UNWANTED SPIRITUAL BAD THOUGHTS

AND OR DISTURBANCES, INDIA IS ALSO SUCH A SPIRITUAL
PLACE, WHERE SPIRITUALSM IS TAKEN REALLY SERIOUSLY. THE HINDU IS WHAT PEOPLE SEEM TO

FOLLOW HERE IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY.
TRAVEL IS IT WORTH IT? OFF COURSE IT IS! ANY DIFFERENCE IS A GOOD THING EVEN IF IT

MEENS SOME SUFFERING. AFTERAL, YOU SOMETIMES HAVE TO
SUFFER TO GET TO THE GOOD THINGS IN YOUR LIFE, OR AS THE SAYING GOES NO PAIN NO GAIN AS

THEY SAY.
I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH SINCE BEING HERE IN INDIA AND KEEPING BUSY AND LEARNING

THROUGH OTHER PROJECTS AND MEEETING
DIFFERENT PEOPLE IS CERTAINLY THE BEST WAY FORWARDS FOR ME. THINGS IN INDIA TAKE SUCH A

LONG TIME,

FROM MR VERMA HE IS AN EXCELLENT MENTOR. IT IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING TO BE ABLE TO USE A

SKILL EVEN IN DIFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD.I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH .

EVEN TO TRAVEL TO SOME CITY TAKES AROUND A
DAY AND EVEN LONGER IF YOU GO BY THE BUS. I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND TRANSPORT TO BE OKAY IT

DOES THE JOB DOSE IT NOT?
PEOPLE MAKE SUCH A SONG AND DANCE ABOUT HAVING THE BEST OFF EVERYTHING BUT REALLY IT

IS YOUR OWN HAPPINESS AND HAVING
FRIENDS THAT IS WHAT MATERS. MATERIALS THINGS IN YOUR LIFE ARE SOMETMES IMPORTANT BUT TO

HAVE A BETTER LIFE BALANCE IS EVEN
MORE IMPORTANT. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SOMEWHAT OFF AN OUTSIDER A PERSON WHO NEVER USED TO

JOIN IN THE ROUNDERS TEAM AT SCHOOL,
THOUGH WHEN I LOOK BACK ON IT ALL I DID ACTUALLY HAVE A GOOD TIME.
I HAVE REACHED A STRANGE TIME N MY LIFE NOW, WHERE I DONT REALY

NEEED THE SAME IN THE WAY OF IFE MATERIALS, IT IS
A MATTER OF A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY FOR ME NOW. THIS PROJECT IN INDIA HAS CERTAINLY BEEEN

SUFFICIENT FOR MY NEEDS A COMBINATION OF THE
WAETHER LANDSCAPE AND THE SIMPLE LIFE STYLE IS AND HAS HELD ME TO BELIEVE IN COPING

PRETTY WELL WITH MY EXPERIENCE HERE.
SOMETIMES YOU GET THE BEST ENJOYMENT FROM HARD SHIP IN A STRANGE KIND OFF WAY. THOUGH

EVEN MY LIFE IN INDIA HAS NOT EXACTLY BEEN
SLUM STYLE, BUT IT HAS BEEN SOME WHAT DIFFERENT THE CONTRAST THAT IS. I HAVE ALWAYS

LIKED CONTRAST THOUGH SOMETIMES
PAINFULL EXPERIENCES ARE WHAT MAKE A PERSON TO BE SOMEONE SPECIAL. I HOPE THAT I AM

INCLUDED IN WHAT I SEE IN LIFE AS SOMETIMES
AND BEING IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY CERTAINLY SEEMS TO LET ME SEE THE OTHER SIDE OFF LIFE.

LIFE HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER. IF YOU
CAN ONLY SEE WHAT HAS TO BE DONE BY WHAT YOU ARE ABLE TO DO. I WILL TRY AND WRITE ABOUT

THE PROJECT IN AS MUCH DETAIL AS I CAN.
THIS I ARRIVED IN DELHI ON THE 8TH JANUARY 2012 TRAVELLED BE TRAIN TO HALDWANI THEN I GOT

A TAXI FROM HALDWANI TO MY WORK PLACE.
WHICH IS CALLED KANDA. THE TRAIN I GOT ON WAS THE RANIKEET EXPRESS IT TOOK ROUND ABOUT

EIGHT HOURS OF JOURNEY TIME.
I ENJOYED THE TRAIN JOURNEY AS I WAS IN A CABIN EVEN HAD A BED TO SLEEP IN. WHICH I HAVE

NEVER BEEN IN BEFORE ON A TRAIN
ANYWAY.
I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED SIMPLE THINGS IN MY LIFE THOUGH AS OFF THE LAST THREE

YEARS MY LIFE HAS BEEN ANYTHING
BUT SIMPLE, BUT NEVER MIND THAT. MY TIME IN INDIA HAS BEEN PRETTY GOOOD I GOT A GOOD OLD

TOUR OFF DELHI WITHOUT
MEANING TO. SOMETIMES WHEN YOU TRAVEL THAT IS WHEN THE BEST THINGS CAN HAPPEN. I HAVE

TO BE ABLE TO WRITE DOWN
EVERYTHING THAT I SAY. EVEN IF IT MEANS NOT VERY MUCH. WHEN IN HAVE BEEN WORKING I HAVE

BEEN GAINNING EXTREEMLY VALUABLE
EXPERIENCE THROUGH USING MY CREATIVE SKILLS WHICH I NEED TO IMPROVE UPON ANYWAY AND WITH

WHICH ARE ALWAYS ON GOING.
I HOPE THAT I CAN GET AS MUCH OUT OFF MY CREATIVE WORK AS I DO FROM THE REST OFF MY MY

LIFE, I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A GOOD
APPROACH TOWARDS LIFE YOU HAVE TO REALLY. YET BAD THINGS DO HAPPEN TO ME BUT SURELY THEY

ARE NEARLY AT AN END NOW. EVEN BAD THINGS
AND EVENTS IN ONES LIFE CANT GO ON FOR EVER. I GET SO MUCH OUT OFF EVERYTHING THAT I

CHOOSE TO DO IN MY LIFE.
AND WORKING HERE IN INDIA IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS.
